2024: A Year in Review

I can’t believe that Quips & Quills Bookshop has been up and running for nearly half a year. It’s incredible to think about.

From a thought swimming around the back of my mind, to now having to find dedicated space in my home to accommodate the growing collection of thrillers and kid lit, romantasy and sci-fi, to having a mechanism to share my work and the work of my creative friends with a growing, enthusiastic audience has been a fantastic journey.

I am forever grateful for the opportunity to connect with my passions again. This year was challenging, and at a time when I was really down, I found my way up by allowing myself to step away from what I thought was expected of me and allowed myself to explore creativity and entrepreneurship via a different lens.

I am so glad I did.

From vendor markets to farmers markets, from Tecumseh to Bowmanville and lots of places in between, Quips & Quills hit the road to share diverse, Canadian, self-published stories with folks all over Southern Ontario.

I feel so privileged to have been part of this experience.

I met so many wonderful, talented, and hard-working people, from the market organizers to the vendors who make their living creating things and working events to share their creations with consumers.

I have learned so much from my fellow vendors. Their honesty, expertise, and generosity made such an incredible impact on me over this relatively short time.

It really enforced in me the importance of following your passion.

Even on days when it was hard to get out of bed, once I got to the event, I couldn’t help help thinking there was no other place I’d rather be… Well, maybe in an isolated cabin writing my next novel, but if not there, then definitely at the bookshop – wherever the bookshop happens to be!

That’s another thing I love about the pop-up shop aspect of the shop. We’re never in the same place for long, so the chance to check out new towns has been an element of this adventure that I have enjoyed very much.

I look forward to one day settling down and turning the key to open the brick-and-mortar shop, but until such day comes, I will enjoy choosing my selections, loading up the car, and hitting the road.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and support as the business continues to grow. I am so glad you are on this journey with us!

Stay tuned for where Quips & Quills Bookshop will be popping up next year!

All the best to you and yours for 2025!

About the author

Hi! My name is Abigail Grimes, I’m a multi-genre indie author or fiction, poetry and prose. My passion for books has led me to not only write them, but to bring that joy of reading to others with my Indie Book Store, Quips & Quills. My shop will feature work from my very talented friends, both self and traditionally published, as well as other exciting titles from around coast to coast. My focus will be on authors who aren’t often promoted in traditionally commercial spaces. I hope you will come out to see me, and find your next favourite author – who knows, it could be me!

My unorthodox podcast, Written by Grimes: The Podcast is where I post my poetry and chat with my creative friends. Listen in anywhere you listen to podcasts.
